Week 9 Reflective Journal

This week we discussed how we want to advance our nursing careers.  In one of our discussions we were asked to come up with a five year plan.

  • What is your ultimate career goal?
    • I want to be an FNP that works while my kids are at school
  • What will it take to get there?
    • I have to go finish my BSN, and go to an accredited FNP program and pass boards.
  • What education is involved?
    • Masters
  • What is your plan over the next 5 years to achieve your goal?
    • I want to start this year and take one class at a time, completing my FNP in 3-4 years.

We also discussed scheduling, which sounds like a horrendous job.

On my unit we have 8 beds and we staff 5 nurses for each shift.  This leaves us one CN and 4 ICU nurses to take 2 pts each. This is great however our unit is usually not full.  We will often have 2 nurses on call, this makes it so I am often put on call 2-3 times a pat period which is hard on the wallet. However, for someone that only wants to work part time but want the benefits of being full time, it is an awesome gig.
